Tampa Bay Area Cold Case: Mysterious Remains of Young Woman Remain Unidentified After Decades

Tampa, FL – It’s been over 35 years since the discovery of a young African American woman’s remains in an industrial area of Tampa, but despite the passage of time, her identity remains a mystery. On February 6, 1986, authorities found the unidentified female’s body along 2nd Avenue between 31st and 34th streets, sparking an investigation that continues to this day.

According to the original police report, the woman was estimated to be between 16 and 22 years old at the time of her death, with a height of approximately 5’2″. She had “kinky brown hair” and was described as being in a state of decomposition, suggesting she had been deceased for three to eight weeks prior to being discovered.

A subsequent anthropological examination revealed that the young woman had suffered injuries to the left side of her head and nose earlier in her life, likely resulting in a deviated septum. Additionally, several congenital defects were found in her spine, although it’s unclear whether these would have caused her any physical discomfort.

The condition of the woman’s teeth was also noteworthy, with several untreated teeth likely causing her significant pain. Further analysis, including chemical isotope testing, suggested that she was likely born and raised in Florida.

In an effort to bring closure to the case, a facial reconstruction was completed by a NCMEC Forensic Artist, providing a glimpse into what the young woman may have looked like in life. The reconstruction is based on the available evidence and is being released in the hopes that someone may recognize her.

As the case remains unsolved, authorities are appealing to the public for any information. If you or someone you know has details regarding this young woman’s identity or the circumstances surrounding her death, you are strongly encouraged to come forward.

The Tampa Police Department is asking that anyone with potential information contact them directly. The case remains a priority, and investigators remain committed to uncovering the truth behind this tragic and mysterious death.
