Five-year-old kindergarten student Anne Pham tragically vanished during her walk to school in Seaside, California, on January 21, 1982. Fort Ord Army Base became the discovery site two days after her disappearance. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. The investigation into Anne Pham’s disappearance remained inactive for four decades.

Forensic genetic genealogy advancements enabled investigators to identify Robert John Lanoue as the suspect for his service period at Fort Ord as a former Army veteran in 2020. DNA evidence linked him to the crime. Robert John Lanoue, aged 72, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, kidnapping, and sexual assault. In March 2025 authorities sentenced him to spend the rest of his life in prison.
