MALDEN/NEWBURYPORT, MA – After more than three decades, a significant breakthrough has occurred in the cold case of Anthony Angelli Rea, a Malden teenager who vanished in August 1988. Advanced forensic technology has now identified his skeletal remains, although the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

The Essex County District Attorney’s office stated that Rea, born in 1973, was 15 years old when he disappeared. He lived in Malden, Massachusetts, and was last seen at the Harbor School in Newbury.

Investigators have identified partially buried skeletal remains found in marsh grass along Route 95 South in Newburyport as belonging to Rea. The initial autopsy conducted after the discovery was unable to determine the cause of death or establish the person’s identity.

The crucial identification came recently, in 2025, through a collaborative effort. Investigators leveraged support from the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUS), a program funded by the National Institute of Justice. NamUS facilitated funding for specialized work at Othram, a private forensic laboratory in Texas. Othram’s cutting-edge DNA technology played a crucial role in identifying Rea’s remains and linking them to his long-standing missing persons case.

While Anthony Rea’s identity is now confirmed, the cause and manner of his death remain unknown and under active investigation. The inconclusive findings of the initial autopsy have given authorities a new mystery to solve about his cause of death.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding Anthony Angelli Rea’s disappearance or death to contact the State Police Unresolved Case Unit at 855-MA-SOLVE. Investigators hope that renewed attention and the passage of time will encourage individuals to come forward with details that could help bring closure to this decades-old cold case.
